Doctor Who. Lots of Doctor Who. Far too much Alex Kingston (though if you believe that's possible you may be in the wrong place) but I love all companions and Doctor/Rose as well.
There's also some Buffy love, and Glee sneaks its way in there. And recently Sherlock..
Also Jon Stewart. And memes. And cats.
Basically whatever strikes my fancy at any random moment.

So, I was thinking about BBC Sherlock fandom’s hate-on for Sally Donovan, and just earlier today I was talking with Maria about Tara Thorton’s shitty treatment in True Blood.

And then I made myself a list.

You’re not fooling anyone, fandom. I know what’s up.

They want these women to be invisible and get upset when they’re not. Then they’re bitches, sexless (i.e. no chemistry with ANYONE), or sluts. And it’s not like the show writers don’t have the same problem, those tropes are a consistent fallback when it comes to any major characterization of black female characters. But when they step out of those tropes (Bonnie becoming more assertive, not just a support system for the white female lead; Martha wanting the Doctor to see her in a romantic way, not just as a support system for the white lead; Gwen being the LOVE object of several male characters, not just a support system for the white lead)  fandom goes apeshit cause their worldview is being messed with. These women are not supposed to be important, loved, complicated in their minds, just easily forgotten once the episode is over.

:/

I hate Sally Donovan because she’s an obnoxious human being who can’t stand being wrong and goes out of her way to make everything awful, and she’s not developed at all past that.

Citation Needed.  Seriously.  At what point does Donovan convey: “I can’t stand being wrong.  I want to make anything awful”?

Because for me I see someone reacting the way any reasonable person was.  She notes that the department has been over-reliant on Sherlock.  Her previous experiences with Sherlock have given her the impression that he is a big sociopath.  Sherlock is constantly condescending and dismissive towards her.  We can infer that she knows that her position as a woman of color may contribute to her concerns being dismissed, and that Lestrade is too close to Sherlock to be objective, so she makes the responsible decision of bringing the issue to her supervisor so he can decide whether she or Lestrade is right.

And how exactly does that read as “Can’t stand being wrong trolololol”?

Although I think Donovan was right to be suspicious of Sherlock (he was set up) I don’t care for Sally Donovan either, I find that to be my main concern. She wasn’t a likeable person. Considering she was pretty much the only person of color in the entire series, is it really necessary to make her annoying too? That is how she was presented to the audience, you are unable to find enough redeeming qualities in a character with such a small role. She was not meant to be someone we liked and I think that is the problem.

Also I think Lafayette is treated just as shit as Tara is but she is just perpetually pissed off [which she has every right to be] whereas Lafayette bounces from trauma to his typical upbeat disposition, so it appears to be worse for her, both of the primary black characters in True Blood have a rough time but I’d like to write more on that later.

Yeah, that’s what I was trying to say, I was just tired and not good with the English that night and said it totally wrong.

To me, the thing that made me dislike Sally wasn’t that she distrusted Sherlock. That wasn’t unreasonable. And neither was taking it to her supervisor.

It was when she then gloated at John about how she had been right the whole time, that whole “I told you so” speech. Gloating at Sherlock? You know, considering how he treated her, I wouldn’t even blame her. (I’m still at a loss for how Sherlock has gotten through this whole run without someone breaking his nose.) But treating John like that, who was Sherlock’s best friend, who, as far as we know, had never done anything to Sally? That was just shitty.
